One of the questions I most cared about treating (and finally I have some 'time to allow to write something about it) is that in the two largest "social network", or rather online community of artists and aspiring artists on the Internet: I'm talking, of course, DeviantArt and Flickr.
Before analyzing strengths and weaknesses of both platforms, I want to give some historical.
announced that soon I will write two papers, one specifically dedicated to Deviantart, Flickr for the other to explain in detail how the two social-network function (the same applies to the features in common).
deviantART was launched by now more than 10 years ago, in August 2000 and contains works from every genre of visual art, photography, drawing, to painting.
Flickr instead began to be developed two years later and is directed more specifically to photographers and amateurs (with of course, the necessary exceptions).
now turn to the technical characteristics of each platform by analyzing the pros and cons.
Pro
elegant graphical interface and intuitive layout: personal page of each member (I mean free basic account) has several modules:
1) The module "Journal" that contains your personal blog, in which is not possible to insert images if you are not "pro account.
2) The module "Featured Deviation" where you can choose to display one of your works.
3) The module "Favourites", containing your favorite deviations shared by other deviantart account.
4) The module "Devious Information" where you can find and put all the technical information about yourself and your business.
5) The module "Watchers", which lists all the deviant artist who follow your page.
6) The module "Comments", in which members of deviantart will leave you for the note, comments.
Ability to enter unlimited works: you enter your deviation indefinitely, regardless of whether possession of a paid account.
Statistics: the basic account does provide some statistic on. We will show the revenue and the number of visitors in recent days, and then going into detail the number of downloads have occurred, the number of comments in the media to work, etc. ...
URL of your page: is in the form www.tuonickname.deviantart.com
Ability to apply custom watermarks made available by Deviantart: to ensure that there are stolen pictures or, as in most cases are handled and used for commercial purposes, deviantart puts at disposal a watermark logo consists of the platform with the addition of your nickname and the URL of your page.
Against
now is frequented by "dogs and pigs" : let me pass the time. Now, in addition to the artists is absolutely excellent, there are also photographers, graphic artists and experts, and is not particularly easy to come across rude boys.
E 'must speak English: this Social network is presented only in English but, more importantly, it is frequented by Americans for more, then why, you are unlikely to understand to meet people who speak Italian. We suggest therefore a good command of English, both as regards the description of the works or writing the journal, both for what is appropriate management of personal page, read the FAQ and the Forum, etc. ...
The good thing too: not a social network dedicated to one type of visual art, can be confusing.
In a page all functions: from your main page you can perform all the functions, dall'upload writing the journal.
Pro
simplicity and layout of the page: Flickr is unbeatable for what concerns the ease with which it has its own page: a white background and a limited to a layout navigation bar (which you can reach the profile of the photographer and other sections) and exposure of thumbnails of photos uploaded (and any folders, so-called set, where they are stored).
E 'multilingual : then you can also choose the Italian without problems of understanding.
Most users are experts or not novice photographers
's dedicated mostly to photography and other kinds of art.
Against
If you do not have a pro account:
1) you will have a monthly upload limit of 300 MB (and 2 videos)
2) you will not be able to access statistics.
No watermark Platform: if you want a watermark to protect your photos, you apply it with photo editing software (Lightroom, Photoshop, etc. ..) or specific software.
Url personal homepages: is in the form www.flickr.com / photos / tuonickname porfolios to achieve, and to achieve the profile www.flickr.com / people / tuonickname
